Coral Castle

One man, 1,100 tons of stone, a secret taken to the grave.

📍 Florida, USA

Not ancient — but the same impossible question: how did one man move 1,100 tons of stone, alone?

The Site

In Homestead, Florida, a slight Latvian immigrant named Edward Leedskalnin single-handedly quarried, carved and raised more than 1,100 tons of oolitic limestone into walls, celestial sculptures and a perfectly balanced 9-ton swinging gate — working alone, mostly at night, from the 1920s into the 1950s.

The Enigma

Leedskalnin never revealed how he moved and set multi-ton blocks with no heavy machinery, saying only that he understood “the secrets of the pyramids” and the laws of weight and leverage. How he did it is genuinely unexplained — a modern echo of the megalithic mystery, and a favorite case for theorists.

The Journey

Just south of Miami — the most accessible mystery on this list, and a natural stop on any Florida journey.
