“The Venice of the Pacific” — a megalithic city of canals and islets rising straight out of the ocean.
Off the coast of Pohnpei, Nan Madol is a complex of nearly 100 artificial islets laced by canals, built from millions of basalt columns — some up to 50 tons — stacked like the logs of a cabin. It was the ceremonial seat of the Saudeleur dynasty, occupied from around 1200 AD.
How islanders quarried, floated and stacked an estimated 750,000 tons of basalt across open water — with no draft animals and no metal tools — remains genuinely unexplained. Local tradition says the great stones were flown into place by magic, the kind of account theorists find hard to dismiss.
One of the most remote ruins on Earth, reached via Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia. A true small-group adventure to a place few travelers ever see.
