The Site

Some 2,300 miles off the coast of Chile, Rapa Nui holds close to 900 moai — monolithic statues averaging 13 feet and 14 tons, and some far larger — carved from volcanic tuff between roughly 1250 and 1500 by a small Polynesian society.

The Enigma

How a modest population carved, moved and raised statues weighing up to 80 tons across miles of terrain — and why they made so many — has fascinated researchers for generations. Islander tradition holds that the moai simply “walked” to their platforms.

The Journey

Reached by air from Santiago, Rapa Nui is a bucket-list island — a small-group journey among the moai, volcanic craters and Pacific cliffs.
