On a hilltop in southeastern Turkey, Gobekli Tepe is a complex of massive carved limestone pillars set in rings — some 18 feet tall and around 20 tons, decorated with reliefs of animals. It was built around 9600 BC, before pottery, metal, writing, the wheel or farming, by people we understand to have been hunter-gatherers.
Its very existence overturns the old story that monumental architecture required settled agriculture. Who organized hunter-gatherers to quarry and raise 20-ton pillars 11,600 years ago — and why did they later bury the whole site on purpose? These are exactly the questions that place Gobekli Tepe at the heart of the ancient-mysteries debate.
