Colossal Inca walls of interlocking stone that have outlasted every earthquake since.
Above Cusco, the Inca built Sacsayhuamán from limestone boulders — the largest estimated at more than 100 tons — laid in zigzag walls without mortar, their irregular faces interlocking to a seamless fit.
How the Inca cut, moved and fitted multi-ton polygonal stones to such tolerances, without iron tools or the wheel, is still debated. The joints are so exact they have survived centuries of quakes that toppled the Spanish buildings raised on top of them.
