A royal Inca estate perched on an Andean ridge at nearly 8,000 feet — lost to the outside world for 400 years.
Built around 1450 for the emperor Pachacuti and abandoned barely a century later, Machu Picchu sits at 7,970 feet between two peaks. Its temples, terraces and homes are fitted from granite blocks so precisely that a knife blade can't slip between them — and all without mortar.
The Inca left no written records, so the site's exact purpose and its astonishing stonework invite questions. Theorists note the earthquake-resistant masonry, astronomical stones like the Intihuatana, and how builders shaped hard granite with, as far as we know, only stone and bronze tools.
Reached via Cusco and the Sacred Valley, then the train to Aguas Calientes. Journeys often add Sacsayhuamán and Ollantaytambo — more Inca megalithic marvels.
